Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
Hiho,
knew that it must be another C3 ;D
This C3 is part of the Power Supply, evrything's fine it's the same way as painted in the schematic.
greetings
Mathias

Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
Made the box today, think it's got a nice old look:

This afternoon i testfitted al the parts. It fits (when mounted in the right order)

Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
Project finished (and exploded ??? )

I put the power on it for 5 sec. to see the lights, than .... BANG!!!
Must be the elkos in the powerpart of this project, i think.
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
I would make the bail a little smaller and fastening on both sides...
Anyhow it looks perfekt ;D

What's a "bail"? The thing over the tube? I have just enough space to remove the tube without tools. Works fine like it is.
Try it on my amp in the morning (it's to late now) Hope it was nothing (that explosion).
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
This elko exploded (1000u/16v)
[Blockierte Grafik: http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/7161/p1000533al1.jpg]
(9V went in on the +side and the - side was conected to the mass (like it should, i think)
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
As I could see in the photo you used 1N 4148 for the heating.
1N 4148 is rated at 100mA maximum. The PCF 802 needs 300mA current. So the diode willl be blown.
Exchange the diode in the schematic under your finger with a 1N 4001, or 1N 4004 or 1N 4007 and replace the electrolytic.

No, i used a 1n5408.
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
Hiho,
if all the components have been as loose in there before it exploded, some of them might have touched each other and it banged.
Greetings

Picture of the 1000u/16 that has blown:
[Blockierte Grafik: http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/2443/p1000538zu3.jpg].
At the left the 9V ac > 1N5408 diode > 5w resistor > +side 1000u/V Elko - side > heizung rohre. Think the elko should be the other way around.

no, the 1N 5408 diode.

I also think that the diode is the wrong way ...
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
I agree too - the diode is the wrong way around, but the capacitor is connected the right way.

Don't think so.
I tested the RTD on my amp. It works (with blown elko) If the diode was wrong conected it should do nothing i think.
It's got too much hum (probably the long cables inside) and the output is very high. Working on it.
Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)
Maybe the foto you´ve postet misleads me. But it looks like the anode of the 1N5401 and the + of the 1000µ could be connected:

You are wrong - it does not matter whether the tube heater sees a positive or in your case negative voltage in respect to ground, but if you then connect the positive terminal of the electrolytic to this negative supply voltage you are going to explode the capacitor. I speak from experience here too ![]()
It's got too much hum (probably the long cables inside) and the output is very high. Working on it.
The hum is caused by the inability of the electrolytic to filter the negative voltage - either turn the electro round OR the diode and you will solve the hum problem (as well as the exploding capacitor phenomenon ![]()

Yep, you are right. I´ll fix it tomorrow, and the hum will also probably disapear.
Me am stoepid ::)
