Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

  • Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

    Hey,

First of all: i have absolutly no experience, except wiring a lot of guitars and a Bender Fuzz.

I ordered the RDT1 live (there where some parts missing, but Klaus sended the rest, and i'm now waiting for them) If you read this Klaus: service is super!)

So i want to build the RDT1 Live. I did a lot of research here in the last two weeks and printed all i could find. Still have a lot of questions and stuff i don't understand.

I used the searchfunction a lot and found many answers, but some i couldn't find. (not that i am lazy and stopped to search, but probably because i don't know some of the right German words to use in the searchfunction)

I'll give each question a number, so it's more easy to answer them.

Hope you want to help me learn to build this kind of stuff.

    Question #1

    I found this Lochraster layout:

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://forum.musikding.de/gallery/albums…1Lochraster.jpg]

When i look at the schematic from tubepower:

    http://www.tubepower.de/german/main_de.html

i get the feeling that they are totaly different at some points. Looking at the lochraster, i see the serie of D1, D2, D3, D4. D2 is directly connected to C4 (in the lochraster) and i can't find that in the tubepower link.

Question #2 In the tubepowerlink is see at the bottom left R11 and R12, that should be R1 and R2 (am i right?)

Sorry for the (maybee stupid) questions, but i have to start learning somewhere.

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

Finished the print for the powersupply.

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/2514/p1000526jo0.jpg]

Drilled a small hole in the socket to fit a small led to light up the tube from down under (where the conection in the middle was before).

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/2908/p1000528wa3.jpg]

Now i have another question. Is it better to solder as much as possible to the socket or solder all the stuff to a board and then connect it with wires?

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

    Hi,

    Answer 1:
D2 is connected to ground (0V) and C4 is connected to ground in the schematic, so thats the connection where they come together.

    Answer 2:
That is correct, I did not use the numbering of the schematic.

    Answer 3:
It is better to solder as much as possible to the socket to avoid oscillations and lots of wiring. ;)

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

Hey Thanks for the advice. I'll try to solder as much als possible to the socket.

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

    I see in the RTD schematic a capacitor (C3 = 2200P) Is that the 22n100? (22x100???)

    or the 2n2 J 100?

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

    Hi,

2200 p(F) is equal to 2.2 n(F) = 2n2. (The letter sits in place of the decimal point).

    success!

    Bernd

edit: Thanks to nessbass - the missing point returned ;)

    I pimped my tube

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/2014/p1000532uv2.jpg]

    Cool, isn't it?

    Still have 3 questions:

    1. The capacitor C8, the 1000u/16V. Is that one needed in the schematic, because i saw another schematic of the RTD where this capacitor wasn't used.

    2. Where my finger is, there is a 1N4148 in the schematic ("Alle Doide = 1N4148 o.ä."). In the electronics store the said i should use a 1N5408 DC , because the 1N4148 would blow up. Are the right about that?

    [Blockierte Grafik: http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/7161/p1000533al1.jpg]

    3. Don't know how to wire the pot in the picture downunder.

    Is it :

    left from switch
middle to capacitor to rest of circuit
    right to mass?

Or is the capacitor 0.015u some kind of treble-bleed and should it be wired across the middle and right connections of the pot?

    Hi,

1)You don't need the Capacitor if you don't use rectified heater voltage. That means if you just leave out the diode an connnect pin 4 directly to the 9VAC you can also leave out the capacitor.
2)I think it is better to use a diode whit 1A maximum current, because the tube is heated with approx. 300mA an the maximum current of a 1N4148 is below this value. But you can also build the RTD with AC-heater, I built it like this an I don't have any problems with hum.
3)Yes connect the pot like this, perhaps you have to change right and left (belongs to the side from which wou lokk at the pot). The capacitor is no treble-bleeder, it is just the input-cap of the circuit, which blocks any DC-voltage from the circuit.

I hope I was able to help

    Good luck ;)

Okqy, thanks, now i can go on building.

the idea with the LED is cool

but i would use a red or orange LED with a little bit less voltage to give it the tube glowing effect

Thought about that..... but i wanted a real eyecatcher, something different.

    Hiho,

I suppose you know that the little + on the Elko right besides your thumb there on the photo means the opposite of the - printed on the side of the Elko with the short leg, now think about that ;)

Yes, i know. But ca you explain C3 than in the picture on top of last page? I thought the power should travel in one way with elcos?

    Hiho,

    C3 is no Elko.

Strange. I ordered the RTDlive from musikding and the C3 i got is a elko. Even all the pictures i saw of the RTDlive, i saw elko's in that place.

  • Re: Know nothing, wanting to learn (RTD1 Live)

    Hiho,

as painted in the Schematic on the Photo C3 is a 2200p, wich could also be written as 2n2 or 2,2n or 0,0022u, which C3 are you talking about?
    I'm confused ;)

    greetings

    This C3:

If you can load a elko only from 1 side (+/-) why are elkos c3 and c2 than not the other way around?
