Re: Z.Vex Machine
Hi folks,
has anyone tried to build the machine?
i did -proto'ed it- ..and it came with certain issue,
stock form, it does, and certainly sound, like serious crossover distortion.. however its gated... so the decay is ugly, and certainly works awful at low gain settigns
now, when taking off the two base to ground 22k resistors, things get fixed, the sound ain't gated.. but the gain loss is abismal (so under unity gain)
any ideas?
Re: Z.Vex Machine
;D
Do it vex-like: Just add another SHO ;D
Ok, Ok, I :-X .

enjoy!
i also have an octane 3 if anyone is interested.
Re: Z.Vex Machine
i'll post another pic with the part numbers on them when i have time.
Re: Z.Vex Machine
Thanks for the WM shots, can you tell us the value of the cap that goes from the 3rd lug of the EQ pot to gnd?
I would love to see pics of the octane 3!
Re: Z.Vex Machine
Wow!
What are those high quality capacitors he's using :o ??? :-X
Re: Z.Vex Machine
Thanks for the shots!
The Octane3 would also be interesting, especially beause the Octane2 schem has been posted here, some weeks ago.
Re: Z.Vex Machine
Those green caps are film types, soundwise a bit softer than the boxed metal Cs.
I got another inside pic of the WH and it seems that ZV revised the circuit a few times.
In my pic you can clearly see 2 XICON 100uF and a multilayer ceramic as i-cap and the pots are from a different manufacturer.
Tone-caps are multilayer ceramic types too.

Was du dann damit machst ist mir dann völlig egal. ;D

Re: Z.Vex Machine
Hi Juergen
I was being sarcastic :), they look like cheap mylar capacitors to me :o
I thought he would use polystyrene or metallized polypropylene for the price he charges ;D
Re: Z.Vex Machine
here are the parts as i see them. one of the resistors was quite hard to read...
Re: Z.Vex Machine
here tis..
Re: Z.Vex Machine

some pics of the octane 3. they are pretty bad though as my camera batteries were wearing down as i was taking pics...
Re: Z.Vex Machine
also, if anyone makes a schematic out these pics, I would love to see it so let me know!
Re: Z.Vex Machine
I just noticed that the pots are different between the WM I drew and the pics you posted. I remember ceramic caps and the pots were certainly different because I was worried about breaking one loose as I worked on it. I do remember that the guy who owned the pedal said it was a very early WM.
Thanks for the gutshots of the Octane! Without tracing it, I think it's safe to say it is a Univox Superfuzz clone.
Re: Z.Vex Machine
could somebody please send me the octane 3 schematic?
thx benny
Re: Z.Vex Machine
Ok, here is the result of the austrian jury concerning the "wholy monster":
In fact older units seemed to use different components looking like this:

You did a real good job, only the resistor values are as I said. This occurs, beacaus if you measure the resistor R5 you willl have in parallel R6 in series with P3. R6 and P3 give 15k. so you have in parallel to the 10 another resistor of 15k.
Using the formula:
R1xR2/R1+R2 for paralleled resistors give:
10x15/10+15 =
150/25 =
6 k
The same for R6:
You have 4k99 in parallel with 20k:
4,99x20/4,99+20 =
99,8/24,99 =
3k99
This are exactly the values you measured.
