• Sorry for doing it in english, but my german is rather poor

I built the G2 and I think it's a little miracle. No hum at all but still enough power to upset my wife. ;D

When the tube distortion starts at half volume I find the lows a bit fuzzy, as if a fuzz is in the circuit. Is that normal or did I do something wrong?

Noiseless but still a lot of noise

  • Re: G2 fuzzy lows?

    hello dolby,

i think that this is part of the philosophy behind this little amp.

the amp stays rather clean/crunchy until the half way of the vol.pot and then the volume doesn't increase any more therefore the distortion increases more and more.

you can use that for controlling the distortion with the vol.pot and of your guitar and the strength of the string attack.

try the following: put the amp vol. at ~ 3 o'clock and then try to get a clean or light crunchy sound with decreasing the guitar vol.pot.

then you can control easily the amont of the distortion (and the sound) with your guitar controls and the dynamic of your playing

  • Re: G2 fuzzy lows?

    Thanks for the response

I probably did not describe my problem well enough. :-[

I generally like the tube distortion that comes in at half volume and higher but in addition I hear a kind of rattling sound in the speaker , like a very low frequency, which I do not like.

I have an 18W which is more 'crispy' (less fuzzy) in its distortion (but at much higher volume, so not suitable for practicing)

(if it's still not clear I should maybe try to record a sound sample if that is possible on this forum)

Noiseless but still a lot of noise

  • Re: G2 fuzzy lows?

    Oh, I see

I don't know this problem. I built two g2 amps, and they sound okay, there is no rattling in the speaker at low frequencies ...

i built them in little combo enclosures each eqipped with a 8" jensen speaker, and they sound very good.

maybe i don't hear it because of the strong roll-off off those speakers at deep frequencies, beyond 110 hz.

maybe in your case there are bad vibrations of the enclosure or the speaker doesn't work well?

  • Re: G2 fuzzy lows?

the speaker should not be the problem. I'm temporily using one Celestion G12 Vintage 30 speaker from an open cabinet I built for my 18W. With the 18W I don't have the rattle.

I have ordered a Celestion Tube 10 to make a combo with the G2.
Do you recommend to close the back of the combo?

Noiseless but still a lot of noise

  • Re: G2 fuzzy lows?

i wouln't recommend closing the back.

there are two much uncontollabele vibrations because of the resonances of the speaker and the enclosure ...

in my opinion, a half closed back is the best way.

    Zitat von DOLBY

Do you recommend to close the back of the combo?

Since it is a tube amp, you need ventilation for the tubes and transformers. That will be difficult to do in a combo. So, combos are almost always open back.
