G2 problem/part substitution

  • Hi,

this is my first post here. I am trying to build my first amp - a G2 that I received from Musikding yesterday. However, after finishing the power supply section I discovered that there is a capacitor missing, namely the C5, which according to the BoM should be a 470pF that is rated for 250V. Unfortunately I cannot find capacitors here for that voltage rating. The highest I have is 50V. But when I take a look at the schematics, I'm not sure if there will be high voltages going through this capacitor, as it is almost directly linked to the grid of V1b?

What I am wondering about, in short, is if it would be safe to use a capacitor with a lower rating, or if that isn't good practice. I was really looking forward to test this amp during the weekend, so it was kind of a blow in the face... any help is appreciated. The capacitors I've got are 50v ceramic capacitors. It will probably affect sound too, but at least I can test it while I wait for a new cap.

I will try without the cap before Klaus sends a new one.

However, another thing. I am ready with the power section of the amps, and have just taken some readings with my multimeter (as it says on page 12 of the manual). I get ~200V for red-red(pt), 6,4V for blue-blue(pt) and only 203VDC for red-grnd (OT). I found this last number a bit disturbing, as it says to allow for +/- 5% error. However, this is more like 20+%... is this normal?

    Hi,
for C5 you can use a capacitor with a lower voltage rating too, as you don't have significant DC at this cap. 50V is fine, but I would prefer a polypropylene type as the original one.

Thank you Martin, I just had a ceramic, so I went with that. I will substitute it with the proper one when I get it.

By the way, the build went just fine. It was just on the limit with my clumsy chubby fingers in that small space, but it seems to work. I really like the tone. A super amp for practising those rock & roll tunes ;)

    Best,
