G2: high frequency whisle problem

  • Dear all,

I just finished the G2 kit and it sound fine, except when the tone
pot is turned clockwise for more than approx. 70% ... then I
hear a high frequency whistle for all settings of the toggle switch (fat, smooth, ...). I have this if the volume is almost completely open (near
max or max volume), and I use a 16 ohm speaker (I adapted the wiring to the output transf. to terminals 2-5).

Is this normal ... or is there something wrong ... and what can i do
    about it?

    Thanks

  • Re: G2: high frequency whisle problem

    hi jan,

that could be a microphonic tube
first take both tubes out and put them back in, this sometimes can help
if not turn the amp on, connect an instrument, set volume high and carefull tick the tubes (first remove the metal shields) with a wooden stick or a pencil
a microphonic tube will make loud sounds now
try another tube (make sure it is the same type, tubes used in the G2 have a different pinout than ECC8x / 12Ax7)

    good luck, RR

    Dear RR,

I checked what you suggested and when I hit the tubes
with a pencil, they are dead quite ... so the problem is not
fixed ... so what to do next? Any suggestions? I checked all
the voltage according to the scheme and they are all witin the
    specified 5% range ...

Additional information: this high frequency wistle is approx the same
of the normal and fat setting, but considably different for the smooth
setting. If you turn the tone pot completely open, it sometimes
happens that this wistle is not there immediately, but only after
some time, sometimes half a minute or so. Once it is there, you cannot get it away except by turing the tone pot anti-clockwise ...
(I use the amp with volume completely open since then it sounds
    best!!).

    Any suggestion is welcome
