Musikding Range (noisy germanium transistor)

Hello,

I've recently built the Rangemaster clone from Musikding and everything went well until I tried it. It is just unusable due to the excessive noise it produces (a very loud hiss). A friend of mine also bought the kit and he too complains about this problem...
I soon found that the problem was in the germanium transistor (EFT83C-JT) because when I tried a BC558 (silicon) the noise was gone and it is totally usable this way!
Is this a common problem of these transistors or we just had bad luck?

Hi

I say the EFT83C is completely unsuitable for a RANGE. With safety he also has too much for leak current.

Hi!

Was the EFT83C included in the kit? These transistors normally sound excellent in a Rangemaster, but of course it is important that is has a low leak current. You are the first one who is not satisfied with it and has problems with the sound.

Yesterday I received a new EFT83 (that was fast! :o ) and everything is fine now! The new transistor has minimum noise and is excellent, the other EFT83 was really faulty as I suspected.

sorry dass ich den Threat nach 3 1/2 Jahren nochmal aus dem Grabe hebe.
Ich habe mir vor kurzem auch den Range-Bausatz bestellt (mein 3. Projekt, ansonsten blutiger Anfänger) und zusammengebastelt. Nachdem ich im 2. Anlauf den Transistor in der richtigen Stellung hatte, war ich auch erschrocken über den unfassbar starken Rauschteppich, der über dem ansonsten guten Sound liegt.
Auf meinem Transistor steht auch "EFT 83C HT", was mich bei der Fehlersuche hierher geführt hat.
Habe ich auch einen falschen Transistor abgekriegt oder hab ich was missverstanden?

Ich wär froh, wenn mir jemand kurz dazu ein paar aufbauende Worte hinterlassen könnte

Hi,
Einen falschen Transistor bestimmt nicht, allerdings mit Sicherheit einen mit zu hohem Leckstrom. Dann rauscht's halt.
