L-pad which wire is + (m15mk1)

  • I'm soldering a l-pad http://www.marvac.com/fun/l_pad.aspx.
Now I'm wondering which wire to connect to which lug on the jacks.
I am building the l-pad in a box which I can connect between amp and speaker using normal guitar cords. Would the tip of the plug be the + side according to the url?
I built the amp for playing (it works) and I don't have deep understanding about the circuits function.
When I plug the cord into the 8ohm output and measure continuity on the plugs
tip and side, there is continuity, should it be so?

    Hi,
you're right, the + is the tip of the plug. Are you using really just guitar cords (shielded wire)? These could work with the A15, as it has only 15W, but with high power amps the wire will turn to smoke as it is much too thin. So you should use speaker cable to prevent that ;)
When you measure between tip and ring of the speaker cable connected to the amp you will measure near zero, because you're measuring the pure resistance of the secondary winding of the output transformer, which is NOT the impedance the speaker "sees" when the amp is running.
    Regards,
    Martin

Thank you for your answer. I used the word guitar cord to be clear what I'm talking about; I use proper speaker cable between amp and speaker (and inside speaker box).

In theory, + and - doesn't matter. The speaker doesn't know what is positive or negative - it just sees an AC signal. However, if one side of the speaker signal is referenced to ground, by convention you have + on the "tip" and - on the "ring" of the plug.

+ and - is important if you use multiple speakers. If one speaker is wired in reverse, it will be out of phase with the other, and they will counteract each other.

(At least this is how I understand it. I'm no expert...)
