J5MK1- low gain

  • i finished J5mk1, and it works fine, except one thing..
..i really can't have much gain
When I switch to gain channel and starting to raise the GAIN pot., it seems like it raises more the volume than the distortion, and is more hi-chrunch than hi-gain..
I think there is something wrong, as it says this amp have a lot of distortion
The circuit seems to be wired correct and the pots are right,.. could someone give me a hint where to look for mistake?

    thanks

    Hi,
perhaps you've set the volume pretty low? The gain knob belongs to a switchable boost stage, so it's not a separate channel! If you want to get high distortion you need to turn up volume and gain (and a guitar with "medium to high output" humbuckers is recommended).

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

I tried with pre-volume at about 70% and master at 50-60% (witch seymour d. JB humbucker) and there still wasn't distortion like on high-octane clips i have,..
there is lack of sustain, and the GAIN knob responds very slow
yesterday i checked voltages at the tubes and somewhere failed more than 5%!!
I will post the voltages later, if this can help

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

    Here are the voltages:

    V1:
    pin1 - 188V (wrong?)
    pin3 - 1,5V OK
    pin6 - 212V ~OK
    pin8 - 1,95V OK

    V2:
    all in 5% range

    V3 all OK

i tested the gain pot and looks it works fine..
So,.. pin1 is the only strange thing
can be somthing wrong or i made all well?

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

How do you define the difference between "high crunch" and "high gain"? If you are getting "high crunch" then perhaps your amp is working exactly as it should.

The J5Mk1 preamp is similar to a JCM800 (AFAIK), so it's not supposed to be a ubermetal-super-high-gain Dual Rectifier/5150/Soldano style amp.

I think my M15Mk1 is high gain, but Martin calls it "medium crunch". It's all very subjective.

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

hmm,..to define,.. i can get a hard rock sound with power cords, but for solo, it has lack of sustain, it seems so weak to me ???
i looked at the schematic of hi-octane, it's almost the same,...so it should have as much gain as the octane?
i have many octane clips, and there is MORE distortion :)

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

can't find the clip from olaf
acctually, i think the only problem is me ;D
maybe i have clips from moded hi-octane

can i make mods like people on ax84 do for the octane?

  • Re: J5MK1- low gain

Ooops, the samples are only published on the german version of my website, I need to change that ::)
Here they are (recorderd aith a stock J5):
