Hey guys, a couple of G2 questions

  • Hey everyone
I ordered a G2 a couple of days ago and it should be here soon, and I have a couple of questions about it. Basically it'll be my first time building an amp and while the G2 seemed too simple, the A15MK1 seemed a little too expensive for me ;D
Now basically, I'll want to upgrade the kit.
I was thinking about an extra gain stage, but most likely include a poweramp and effects loops circuit.
How hard would it be to include this?
Also I'd like to include a 5 band EQ in the front pannel. Would there be enough room in the chassis for this?
If you guys have any G2 pictures, feel free to show.
Oh also, what tubes are in? From the pics it looks like 2 12AX7.
Also (I never stop, it's a French thing), could you advise a 10'' speaker decently priced, with a lot of headroom?

Thanks for any tips regarding this amp guys!

    Hi Pierre,
that's a lot of things you want to change. First of all you would need to change the power supply as the PT ist adequate for the two tubes in the G2, but not for additional preamp stages, power stages or FX loops. I don't think you can place a 5 band EQ additionally at the front panel, as it is pretty small. And I assume, all these changes would mean some extra money, so the amp can be more expensive then the J5 in the end :o
    Regards,
    Martin

Ahh yes it WILL be expensive, but I'm mostly looking for the experience, not a cheap amp. I'm ready to try a lot of things, and if this one goes well stock I'll most likely get a A15MK1 Deluxe that I'd keep unmodded: The soundclips were great and I love the specs.
I got the G2 because it was the simplest, and cheapest, and I wanted to learn how a simple amplifier works basically.
Also, based on the 'naked' pics I saw, it has no power stage right? The two pretubes (12AX7s?) provide the poweramp?

And yes i had a look at the website thanks! I'm sorry I didn't specify, I meant pictures of it... dressed ;D As in, with its encasing or such.
Wow all this German is confusing...

Ah and last but not least: Those kits really seem like great deals and I can't wait to try more ;)

It's an amp, not just a preamp, so of course it has a power stage. The 2W it produces should be enough to wake up the neighbours if you crank it with a decent speaker...

The tubes are not 12AX7. I'm guessing that one of them is a dual triode preamp tube
that is used as a push-pull poweramp.

You should try to build the amp without modifications first. Once that works, you could try some changes. An effect loop is fairly simple, there are several threads about this on the forum.

Forget about the 5-band EQ. Try to tweak the tone to get one good sound you like instead. If you really want exact control over the frequencies, get an EQ pedal and put it in the effect loop or infront of the amp.

  • Re: Hey guys, a couple of G2 questions

What I meant is that the preamp tubes must, as you said, be the poweramp themselves too. There doesn't seem to be any poweramp tubes on it.
And yes i do plan on building it myself first haha... Then if I'm not dead and I feel adventurous, mod it.

Ahhh I see then. Thanks! I didn't see it on the specs so I was wondering. I doubt I'd need to replace them anytime soon anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. Danke!
