Face 69er won't work

  • Help!
Finished building the Face 69er but cannot get any sound from it other than a few crackling noises.
Checked all resistors and Germanium ac128s (self supplied but Hfe checked out at 57 and 70ish). Cannot check the capacitors. Wiring checked many times and appears OK. Also checked for dry solder joints and fixed if necessary.
The bypass works OK, but as soon as I switch on the effect, the led glows for a second then fades. Just crackling noises from the amp when I play the guitar. Tried with AC 128 and silicon PNPs (BC558) but always the same. ALso, there's a lot of static if I touch the pots, especially the 500k volume. PLease note I'm testing BEFORE mounting in the enclosure.

    Couple of basic questions first:
My AC128s don't have tabs so I identified the pinouts by the orientation, and double checked by testing the B E and B C voltages - slightly higher one indicating the B E. However, on the circuit board picture I'm assuming the tab indicates the Emitter. That means the emitter for Q1 faces outside the board, and Inside the board for Q2. Is this correct?

I have a multimeter with diode check, but how should I confirm if D1 (I used a 1N4002 instead of 1N4001) is OK.

    lAny advice greatly appreciated. ?(

  • Do you use power supply or battery? The FX won't work if you have multiple FX on the power supply because most FX have a negative ground but most to all germanium based FX a positve ground. If this isn't the problem i'm afraid that i'm no help here since i am a Newbie too.
    Good Luck
