A couple of questions (m15mk1)

  • Hi, I'm building the m15mk1 and finished drilling the chassis
and the main board and power board are ready (and checked and
measured several times - though I know that the problem is always
lurking somewhere...) and got couple of questions.
Tha plastic over the chassis - am I suppose to take it off or what
    have you done with it?
So far I have built stompboxes and never dealt with the shrink tubing
and wondering about it's installation. Should I slip it on the wire
before soldering and then (after soldering) drag it on the joint
and heat/shrink it, or is it just delivered as tube and I can use it
the way I see as the best like cutting it open and wrapping the
piece over the joint and the heat?
How do you work with your project after installing the transformers,
meaning that most of the work then happens on the other side of the
    chassis?

    regards tomi

Remove the plastic before you fit any components to the chassis but you can do the drilling and stuff with it on (I found it handy for marking out). It is there to protect the chassis from scratches, gouges, dirt, etcso that you get a nice shiny product.

Heat shrink sleeve is supposed to be put over the lead before soldering (keep it well away from the joint you are soldering as the heat travels through the wire and can prematurely shrink the sleeving), if you put it on after it will not work - trust me, try it. The sleeving is there to act as an insulator to prevent you from getting shocks and shorts so always make sure it completely covers the joint it is on.

The transformers are pretty hardy items so you can rest the chassis on them (just watch you don't stress the joints on the power transformer too often) but you may want some wooden props by the time the valves are fitted.

    Good building!

Madamp - Amp Mad more like!

  • Re: A couple of questions (m15mk1)

Thank you for your thorough answers.
I know I'm dealing with lethal voltages and when I ordered the kit earlier this year I had actually no knowledge about how tube amps actually work (I've had several tube amps though...). So it's been very rewarding because I've read hundreds of pages about tubes and tube related circuits and now I have some (vague) idea what I'm dealing with.

    regards Tomi
