Hi all,
I'm goin' to order a J5 kit and would like to know if it is possible to increase the power of the amp? Putting two EL84 instead of one? Many modifications?
Thanks.

Re:more power for J5
yes, you may add another EL84, but not in parrallel (the current would be too high for the OT). You can add another EL84 in a self split configuration and will get about 8W then. This is a pretty easy modification, it's only the tube, some wire and some resistors.

Re:more power for J5
Hello,
Martin:
Can you give a little explanation how this is achieved. Maybe it would be aa topic for the J5MMk1 FAQ.

Hello Martin.
What do you mean esactly for "self split"?
There is a diagram for this added tube?
I'm interesting too!!

Self-split is a push-pull poweramp without a phase-splitter. Instead of feeding one of the power tubes with an inverted signal, that input is grounded. This gives about half the power of a regular push-pull poweramp.
Checkout the Firefly amp at http://www.ax84.com. It has a self-split poweramp with a dual triode (12AU7) as powertube.
Re: more power for J5
Hi.
I've read something about this self-split wiring.
To achieve this on my J5 I have to connect the pin9 of both EL84 to OT, then the CT to the power supply (310v).
The pin 2 of one EL84 to the signal and the pin2 of other tube to the ground. Then both the cathode in series with a resistor, to ground.
Now:
1) will change the primary impedence of OT?
2) which value I have to give to EL84 cathode resistor?
Thanks
