Der Angel - No change in sound

  • Hi All!

I recently ordered the angel chorus, soldered it, looks good, but... it has no effect on the sound..

During troubleshooting I have tested the voltages and paths I know atleast, but I cannot find whatever is the issue.

    - VR measures at 5V output
    - Input of NE5532 appears to be 9V
    - Input of PT2399 appears to be 5V (as expected above VR value)
    - Ground appears good on PT and 1N

So the pedal engages, I hear the click but turning the knobs does nothing, also, is it correct that there should be no ground on the pots ? the wiring layout seems to indicate that.

    Hi atxbyea,

Can you make some gutshots of your build? Esspecially from the pots and the footswitch.

    Regards,

    Arjan.

  • Hi atxbyea,

Thanks for the gutshots. I've seen some solder connections to double check, which are red marked in the attached picture.

(1)There is probably a lost piece of solder on the board
    (2) Is the 'OUT' connection well soldered? It looks like this wire is not making good contact to the PCB.
    (3) Is this solderpoint really soldered? It looks like this one is not soldered at all (R12).

    Please check this first.

  • Awesome Arjan!

I can't believe I didn't spot that unsoldered tip, I've been looking at it for a long time :( I need new glasses!
Now I have modulation of the sound, but yet another issue, the LED stay on even if the pedal is disengaged, I thought it might be some short because the box is metal, so I tried to connect power without the cover on (PCB hanging loose) but still the LED stays on when the pedal is disengaged.

Also, the modulation is not very noticable until atleast 40-50% of the knobs are turned, don't know if that is expected behavior on this pedal.

  • Hi atxbyea,

DerThorsten could have been right. The ground of the LED is indeed making ground permantly.
What you also should do is to shorten the wires on the soldering side. there are some wires too long :) and then you can get in trouble when you have the PCB build in the enclosure.

    Regarding the modulation:
Could you double check the resistance or coding from both potmeters? There is a possiblility that these are changed.
Do you have a Ohm meter? When not, loose the potmeter from the enclosure and check that the upper potmeter has a B100 K coding and the other potmeter has the B500K coding.
