How to take measurements and diagnose the problems?

  • Hey everyone,

I got my first amp assembled and thankfully, it works. But I would like to know more about the amps and technology step by step. Starting with how to properly measure and what exactly to measure. I know how this works in general with resistance, capacitance (I had physics in school and academy) and how amps work in general, but I've got a few questions. Please, feel free point me to a specific article or something, but rather for dummies, not for amp techs.

What should I be looking for to make sure the bias is correct?
I've heard people talking about measuring heater — what is that and how do I measure it?

Thanks and any help is appreciated.

  • Please just check the schematic and determine if you understand how to measure the voltages shown in there. If not, post your questions here and I'm happy to explain, if it's not about real basics like what is DC or AC ;) Regarding your questions: "Heater" is the 6,3V 2A section of the transformer shown in the schematic at the bottom left (should be 6,5V AC between the two taps of the transformer), "Bias" is the voltage at pin 3 and 8 of the output tube (should be 10,5V DC against ground).
    Regards,
    Martin
