A15 Mk2 power transformer hot and low voltages

  • Hi, I finished the assembly of my a15mk2 deluxe, but I have a problem:
    The measured voltages on the valves according to the instructions of the vendor are lower on average by 25% (while the maximum gap is 10%);
The power transformer on the secondary side heat to the beast, in 5 minutes is pretty hot, even with the standby open.
I also measured the resistance of the windings that are in line with those indicated by the vendor.
For a quick test, the sound is normal and everything seems to work fine, volume and sound good, all the controls and the two channels work smoothly, without noise.
It 'clear, however, that something is wrong somewhere, the sound is ok, i think in power section ... anyone has any advice on where to intervene to adjust voltages and temperature?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I don't find any measured value (eg. for some relevant voltages or the temperatur of the xformer) in your problem description. That's not a good starting point to help you...

The description "are lower on average by 25%" seems very summarized to me - so an answer could only be general too.

And what does "The power transformer on the secondary side heat to the beast" mean? How can you distinguish between a primary and secondary side of the heating?

Normally here it closes with my name ;)

  • Thanks for your fast answer!
I found the main problem in a wiring error at the footswitch in the 20v section, now the trasformer heats up much less (before in a few minutes you can't touch it) and the values of the voltages are nearly correct.
The only value out of the 10% gap are on V1 pin 1 and v3 pin 6.
    Below all measured values:

    Main voltage 221v

    V1
    pin 1 132 (154 on schematic)
    3 1.27 (1.2)
    6 130 (145)
    8 1.13 (1.2)

    V2
    1 214 (228 )
    3 2.89 (3)
    6 144 (156)
    8 1.12 (1.2)

    V3
    2 109 (116)
    3 115 (123)
    6 84 (110)
    8 1 (1)

    V4
    1 166 (171)
    3 15.4 (17)
    6 165 (181)
    8 15.5 (17)

    V5 and V6
    3 266 (282)
    4 275 (288 )

Are the two values out of range accettable?
How can heat the transformer when work normally?

    Many thanks

    Enrico

  • Hi Enrico,
the values are fine, +/- 20% are still fine in most cases (except e.g. for the bias voltage at the power tubes :-))
All transformers heat up, because their efficency ratio is < 100%. Depending on the construction and utilization they heat up differently.

  • Good, so it's all ok!
    Thanks for your help.
I tried the amp yesterday, it sound really good! It's pleasant on clean, rock and with boost on for heavy riffs! ;D

    Regards

    Enrico
