Tubescreamer ic1 hot ! and no sound

  • I have a promblem with my just assembled but not working screamer.
    The led does work but i have no sound and the rc4558 is getting hot fast.
    I have also a weird thing, when the ic is inserted, the resistance between the + and the - of the DC in is 50R, and infinite when ic1 is unplugged.
    Does it have a problem ?

    Thanks and sorry for my English (i'm french)

  • Hi !
    Without pictures of the circuit board and the wiring its very difficult to help . The most obvious reasons for the effect not working might be
    1. footswitch wrongly positioned , see here for footswitch wiring without LED , the pins have to be horizontically positioned
    http://diy.musikding.de/index.php/start.html and
    2. IC wrongly positioned ; the ic has a small printed dot at a corner to mark pin 1 ; pin 1 is marked with a small white triangle on the circuit board

    Greetings and good luck

    Carsten

    "There will be SOUND!" ( Roadie,1980 )

  • when the IC gets hot, there is definetly too much electrical current. Typically this is caused by wrong insertion direction, misconnections, solder bridges or wrong components

  • Here are some pictures of the soldering/wiring job it's a bit messy for the wires sorry
    by the way i already did 2 pedals before with success (der zen, der muff american) so i checked the switch multiple times, but i may be tired :D

    dont mind the color of the pot's wires, i inverted on 2 pots the blue & the green
    i will try tomorrow the switch w/o the led

  • The orientation of the IC is correct- Most probably the dc jack is wired wrong.
    Measure the voltages at all pins of the IC and the transistor! (Black cable of DMM to ground)

  • Zitat von roseblood11;330012

    Most probably the dc jack is wired wrong.

    Shouldn't D4 prevent that, and how could the LED light up, if the polarisation is mixed up?

    Maybe the IC was inserted wrong, when switched on the first - and for the chip last - time?

    Cheers
    John

  • Actually the first time the chip was oriented correctly but because it didn't work i tried to reverse it. Maybe it is dead ?
    here are the voltages at the IC pins :
    ic1 = 7.58
    ic2 = 7.37
    ic3 = 5.17
    ic4 = 0
    ic5 = 4,4
    ic6 = 7,7
    ic7 = 7.7
    ic8 = 8.16

  • Zitat

    i tried to reverse it. Maybe it is dead

    A very probable possibility

    without input signal 1,2,3 and 5,6,7 should have around V_BAT / 2 Volts, 8 is at V_Bat and 4 is gnd

    get yourself a new IC and have another go. If you do not want to wait for mail delivery, nearly any dual opamp will do for testing

  • I switched with der zens opamp'.
    The sound is away and kind of gated like in the fuzz factory but in a not usual way.
    I puted the possibly dead opamp in my zen and it dit not work so it is dead, but i still have something wrong in der screamer.

  • It would work but for testing you should use the cheapest IC that you can get. TL072, 4558, 1458 etc

  • So i saw that the level pot had 2 wires reversed so after correcting that i tested the pedal, the sound was again gated but after having checked the voltages, wich are ~ 4v for pin 1-2-3 and 5-6-7 (0v for 4 and 8v for 8) the sound is a normal overdrive, not like the ts9 but it's a different opamp.
    I will buy a new opamp tomorrow at my local electronic store, can't wait for a postal delivery :D
    Thank you all :)
