No sound - Die Factory

  • Hello

I'm sorry I don't speak German, would anyone be able to help me?

I have made the Fuzz pedal "Die Factory" and have followed the schematic to the letter (I believe).

However, when I plug in my guitar and switch it on the red LED comes on but I get no sound. I have tried adjusting all the pots but still nothing.

I read on this forum of a person who had one of the transisters the wrong way around - does anyone know if there is a mistake on the factory wiring layout or if there's a way I can check this until it works?

Any help would be most welcome - this is my first project like this and I'm not sure how I can test my work.

    Thank you in advance!
    Rob

  • Hi,
do you get a bypass signal (when the effect is turned off)? Make sure you wired the switch correctly.
Now the transistors: There has to be some kind of mark on the transistors, and this mark is also printed on the circuit board. Give it a close look.
    Cheers

Thanks Dr Mahoney for your quick reply.

Yes I get a bypass signal.

I checked the marks on the transistors and I'm pretty sure that they are in the circuit the right way around.

I'm not sure what to do next. Any ideas - anything would be a help as I'm a real novice.

    Thanks

Well I'm a novice as well actually, I hope the experts chime in soon.

As long as the LED is on and you get a bypass signal you can be sure you wired the switch correctly. So there got to be a mistake on the circuit board. Make sure that is looks like this at the end: http://diy.musikding.de/images/stories…factorywire.pdf
Did you put in the Caps the right way round?

Well I appreciate your time even more!

Yes, I've checked the Caps too. They're the right way around.

Hmmm.... I'm not sure what else to look at.

    Thanks
    Rob

  • Could you make a picture of the board ? or better two, one from each side, so we can look at the solderpoints and can have a look at the caps etc..

Not neccessarily. Check the switch wiring, a typical biginners mistake is a wrong wired 3PDT switch. In the posted wiring plan the eyes of the solder lugs are pointing vertically.

Check the wiring of the 5 pots.

  • Hi there

I've attached some photos. I hope they're clear enough so that you can make sense of them. The wiring of the pots is all correct I believe - I know it's not easy to see on the pics.

I hope these are clear - do let me know if there's anything that needs clarifying.

Thanks everyone - I really appreciate this.

  • With regard to the eyes of the Switch lugs - I couldn't really make this out on the PDF from the Musikding site - If this makes a difference then I this might be the issue as I think my switch lugs are facing to the side rather than up.
    Rob

  • When i see this right, your swith is turned wrong way, in the pdf the switch is turned 90° so you can look through 3 holes from upside down in the switch ;)

So, you de-solder the switch, turn it 90° and solder the wires back on ;)

    (If i see it correctly)

  • I think you might be right Chrismettal. Thank you so much - that was really hard to see from the PDF, but yes, I think that could well be it.
I'll re-solder tomorrow and hopefully have some success.

Thank you everyone - especially you Chrismettal!

  • No Problem, and it wasnt just me ;)

Good Luck with your Pedal and have fun resoldering :D

  • Great!

Got the thing working. All the knobs are doing what they're supposed to do and I've got some great sounds.

I still have one problem though - there's no sound in Bypass. I wonder if I might have damaged the switch with all this soldering and resoldering. I suppose I could try getting a new switch but if this rings any obvious bells I'd love to know what you think.

    Cheers
    Rob

  • No sound in Bypass has to be something with the wires between in-switch-out

maybe you made a Mistake with the wires at the switch,

but you can check if the switch is working properly with a Multimeter

in bypass, the middle row of contacts and the lower row of contacts should be connected, but only the contacts in a vertical line get connectet by the switch

so, when you see the contacts like this:

    1 2 3
    4 5 6
    7 8 9

then in bypass connected should be:
    4-7
    5-8
    6-9

check this connections in bypass, then you can tell that your switch is working properly ;)

EDIT: By the way, im a young 16 year old german and not very good in english so im sorry, if its hard to understand me :/

  • Hi there, I found this thread very interesting, since I'm facing the same issue as well. Bypass working fine but no signal when enabling the effect. I found the same issue in two different pedals, therefore, I assume it's something dealing with a common item: in my case, the same switch wiring. First of all, I had to find some help in a friend since I'm slightly colorblind and didn't realize about the small "bridge" between lugs 7-8... that took me some days though...
I know it's an old topic, but Grovesnor, did you manage to solve your issue? Do you point out the switch as the root cause of the problem?
And Chrismettal, thanks for your help with these topics, I really appreciate them! BTW, your English is very good! ;)

    THANKS ALL, have fun!

  • Solved!,
thanks to Grovesnor for his guidance and attention.
Finally, I checked all the soldering (lots of cold solder joints!) and replaced the wiring of the pots. The switch was properly oriented, at least, I saved time on that :)

I'm very satisfied with the whole process, because with the assistance of the forum, I succeeded (and learnt a lot of things too!).

    Let's go for the next!
    Rock N' Roll.

  • Hi, i'm new in this forum and i know this thread is quite old but maybe you can help me. I made this kit but the same thing hapoens to me. In bypass the guitar sound passes through to the amp but when i enable the effect the led lightens but NO Sound! I double checked the wiring and everything seems fine. Can anyone help me please? I can put some pictures if you want. Thanks
