Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

• Hello to everyone, I'm from Italy, i'm sorry but i don't speak German... so i will try to explain my problem in english....
I found a scheme about a guitar effect that simulate a "valve distortion"...
[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/varie/valve_dt.gif]

I'm not an electronic expert, and in a first time i connect only three pins of the ic Ne5532 (in+ in- and out), but the effect doesn't work, someone told me that i must apply a voltage to this ic, then i connect pin 4 and pin 8 directly to the 9v battery, now i can listen the sound, but there is a lot of noise, too much, i think there can be an error with the jacks
I've found a mono jack with three pins, two on the back
[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/valve_dt_fr_7.jpg]

and one down below
[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/valve_dt_fr_5.jpg]

I'm not sure that i make the correct connection, if someone can explain it for me....

some photos..
[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/valve_dt_fr_4.jpg]
I haven't found a simple linear 100k pot (little shop in my city...), and i replace it with a simple 100k resistance, i make also some test with more low values, this controls gain.

[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/valve_dt_fr_3.jpg]
In this photo you can see the connection that i've made in a second moment to the Ne5532

[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/valve_dt_fr_6.jpg]

I hope that someone can help me, i will like to make another effect (fat bastard overdrive) but i'm frightened of to make again an effect that doesn't work.
Thanks a lot to all who wants to help me.
Greetings to all...
Zerotre.

Hello,

and welcome to our Forum !!

As ANMATI wrote - You build the circuit with two "dual" OP Amps.
In the Schematic the Signs are one half OPAmp each.
But if you dont know (at my beginnings i thought it too) it looks
like two devices ;)

I compared the Schematic with that one from the Tubescreamer
and tried to fill in the Pinnumbers for a better orientation.
NOTE: The Pinout from the IC is - Pin1 is where the small dot
is onto the Top of the IC, counterclockwise there are the Pins 2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8

And another thing.. - try to use Sockets for the IC.
1) You coud use it easily for another circuit without desoldering
2) there is no fear to damage the IC with the heat of the Solderiron
;D

@all: kann jemand bestätigen, dass ich die Pinnummern korrekt eingetragen hab?

OK, wait for a verification from another Forumuser, because im not 100% shure, that i filled in the correct Pinout to the Schematic.

Ill hope that help You

ciao

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Thanks to everyone,
i've modified the circuits, according to the scheme posted, i think it's correct i take a look at the ne5532 datasheet.
But the effect still doesn't work, there is a lot of noise, i've tried some different jack connection but nothing seems to happen, i've connected the gnd according to the scheme, only to battery (-), to the two jacks and to the pin4 of the Ic.
Thanks again for the help, i'm glad to have discovered this forum.
Bye.

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

wow it seems to works! :)
I don't know how.... ;D

It sounds really great in the overdrive channel of my marshall valvestate, now i would like to buy in the shop the jrc4558 to replace the ne5532, and some germanium diode to replace the 1n4148, which can i buy from the shop?

The next work is the fat bastard overdrive:

any piece of advise about it?
I think that i'll make a scheme and a board with Eagle software, this time i hope to correct the scheme before i solder the component ;D.

Any advice about a scheme that i can make? I like to play hendrix and blues, i've thinked about a fuzzface...what will you advice me?
Thanks again for the help.

Regards,
Zerotre.

the jrc4558 to replace the ne5532, and some germanium diode to replace the 1n4148, which can i buy from the shop?

You can use any germanium diode there should be no tonal difference between them.

I'm sorry I can't give you advice about this, I haven't built one myself.

If you want to build a Fuzz, try this one: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?%20o…=131&Itemid=184
It is quite versatile.

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Thanks for the help,
Ok i'll make, the fatb overdrive, the fuzzface that i've found in that link, i sawn also in that link for another distortion, a big muff, a tube screamer, or a blue magic, i must decide which one, then i make the ordert the shop.
What about a delay effect? Something that i can make buying all the components at the shop.
Thanks a lot.
Greetings.

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hi,

I haven't build the Fat Bastard Overdrive, but it doesn't seem to be very difficult.
I would recommend making some easy circuits before you start with a delay or some sort of phaser circuits, because they are, as a rule, more complex then distortion circuits.
I'm building a PT2399 based delay at the moment and I'm going to write a report about it on this page. So if your interested in this thing I may translate it for you.

best regards,
Johannes

p.s.: Sorry for my bad English. I hope it'll be better after my exchange year in the us :)

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Thanks,
yes i would like to see your report very much, i know that a delay circuits is more difficult, but i would like to make a unique order in the musikding shop, then i'm looking for some scheme to make in the future, but i prefer to buy all components in one order, this becouse in the only two shop near to my city, i've problems to find a simple linear 100k pot, and also the prices are non so good, then for me: "no musikding shop? No effect" ;D.
Thanks again.
Hi to everyone.
Zerotre.

Ps. my english is really not good, excuse me..

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hi,

im glad, that your Circuit works..
If you want to use other parts for Distortion, think about to make them switchable, do play with this or that - as you like...

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hi Zerotre,

no, no, sorry - i mean, You could use a ToggleSwitch to change between different Diodesettings.

For an Example:
You take a Toggle Switch (ON/ON/ON) with two connectors/Pins for each ON Position.
Now You can Solder three different Diodetypes for Clipping (f.eg. 1N914 for Position one, 1N4004 for Position two and some Germanium types for Position thee of the Toggle Switch)
With that You could use different Sounding configurations, if You like..

A simple example is my ColdFirePro (watch the circuit here and look at the HardClipping Sektion at SW4 and SW7) its only ON/OFF.

Questions about that?

bye
Oliver

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

let's see if i've undestood it...:D

i've 6 1n4148 diodes, then i put another six diodes (germanium) and another six again, 1n914, with the switch then, i change set of diodes that the effect uses, and change also the sound....
is it correct?

Regards.
Zerotre.

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hallo,
there is someone who have tried to matching some fet? Iwold like to build a mxr phase 90, i've thinked to buy some transistor then test them to find 4 pieces that matching, but i don't know about how many fet i must buy. any idea?
Thanks.

Yes..

You only have to build the Diodesections each for itself, so you can change with the switch from using the 6 Diodes 1N914 to the 6 ones Germanium and so on....

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hi to all,
I'm preparing some scheme with eagle software, i made a dr Q scheme:

[Blockierte Grafik: http://afrancesco.free.fr/fotomie/Guiteffect/quack.gif]

I've added a footswitch 3pdt, and i've tried to connect it, i'm not sure that is correct, indeed..i think that there are some errors with the bypass.
I've used stereo jacks because in that software they only are present.
Thanks a lot.
Bye.

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Hi!

The first jack has two switches, the "left" and "rigt" side of the lugs are connected as long as there is no plug inserted. So you normally only have to connect two lugs.

The second jack is a normal jack, no switches.

Best regards,

Klaus

• Re:Problem with an effect: "Valve_dt"

Thanks a lot Klaus!
In terms of use what difference is there?

The second jack in a normal mono jack, but it has three pins: tip, ring, the other?

bye
