About to order a J5MkI, something else I should inlude when ordering?

  • Are there any other parts that I should put in my shopping cart when ordering my J5MkI? Pots, cable, a monkey to hand me my tools?

It´s my first amplifier build, so I´m not sure what problems or decisions that might come up when building.

I´m thinking about putting the amp in an old tube radio, and maybe/possibly tear out it´s intestines using the metal chassi that´s been made for the wooden cabinet.

At the moment I´m studying electronics. Have bought some old books about amplifiers and tubes. I aim at putting it together slowly so I can study what each part does. My friend has built some tube amps so I won´t plug it in before he has checked it for me. I know there´s some high voltage to be aware of.

All help and thoughts much appreciated.

  • Hi,

I wouldn't leave the path of well known layouts for a first built, at least considering that the J5 has a higain preamp.
Minor design flaws could lead to oscillation....very frustrating on the first built if it only squeals and screams even if you have no guitar plugged in ;)

You should order some knobs for your amp and at least you should have a soldering iron, solder, desoldering device, a dmm and some handtools (screwdrivers etc.)

Everything else comes with the kit.

  • Hi,

yes, you'll have to do frontpanels on your own since you'll only get a bare aluminum chassis.
Perhaps you get those decals with the kit which you can print your faceplates on and apply it to the chassis, I dunno.

Alternate, you could have someone else making your faceplates such as the schaeffer-ag (schaeffer.de). Lots of folks around here have their faceplates drilled and printed by them and are pretty happy with it, though they are quite expensive.

The linked Chickenheads will work fine I guess.

    Cheers,
    Swen
