Can I use a PC fan in my M15?

  • Having played my M15 for a few hours this week I've noticed the mains transformer and the EL84's get very hot, and because of this, so does the chassis. Could I use the footswitch power supply to power two PC extractor fans to cool the inside? The PC fans are 12V DC 0.18A each. Would the footswitch power supply be able to cope with two of these fans and the footswitch module in parallel?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,
though you have some air ventilation at the back of your cabinet, the chassis get's pretty hot, because the tubes are heating it up, the way you've mounted the chassis. I don't think it's too much heat but if you you want to add a fan, please be aware, that the PT supplies 20V/120mA max!
    Regarts,

    Hi,

another Problem with fans is, that they generate an electric field, which can cause high frequency hum.
So it is important in which direction the fan will be mounted. So you have to try a good position befor you drill the holes for the mounting screws.

    Greetings,
    Oli

You don't necessarily need 12V to power a 12V fan. Using a lower voltage will just make the fan run a bit slower. This can actually be good, because you'll get less noise from it. So, try powering it from the heaters and you'll have plenty of current available. A simple half-wave rectifier (single diode) and a fairly big low-voltage filter cap should do the trick.
